Curriculum - Medical Response in Hostile Environments

Curriculum: While this course will not make you a Corpsman or Medic, it will give you some experience in how to -- at the very least -- help a Doctor should the medical system go down.

Most of us will never put this information to use, but if the something happens, this is exactly what you do...

Suturing—Hands-On:
Suturing is hands-on, where the student learns to suture lacerations or incisions. The instruments provided are exactly the same instruments used in doctor’s offices or in the field by Navy Corpsmen.

Minor and Field Surgery—Hands-On
Minor surgery most always precedes suturing to help shape or clean the area to be sutured. Minor surgery is hands-on.

The student will also learn: Excisions, Drainage, Debridement (removal of dead tissue), Opening Airways (Cric), Excisions, Incisions, Ligatures, Pharmacy.

Medical Kits
Bandages, instruments, medications etc. What you need in a medical kit. A simple medical kit should have... A good medical kit should have... What a great kit should contain...

Bandaging and Advanced Dressings—Hands-On
How, Where and When to use dressings... This is the foundation of all good medicine. Bandaging, be it for a minor scrape or a major laceration is a must know for everyone. Bandages covered are: Band-Aids, Telfa, 4x4s, Roller Gauze, Triangular, Kerlix, Tape, Trauma Dressings, Blood stoppers, Battle Dressings, Pharmacy.

Advanced Dressings—Hands-On
Gun Shot Wounds, Head Wounds, Chest Wounds, Abdominal Wounds, Lacerations, Trauma to the Limbs, Traumatic Amputations, Pharmacy

Dental—Hands-On
The subject is taught by Dr. Tom Loomis (DDS) and the student practices replacing lost fillings and crowns. Dr. Loomis pioneered Field Dentistry for "Medical Repsonse in Hostile Environments" classes more than 14 years ago. The subject matter goes way beyond dentape and other temporary dental measures.

Fracture Management—Hands-On
This is advanced as possible to help fracture patients in remote or hostile conditions. Immobilization, Splinting and Moving to aid in safely moving the patient to an area where the more advanced fracture management—casting-- may be practiced.

Advanced Fracture Management--Hands-On
Casting is hands-on and exactly what a Doctor does when they put a cast on a patient. Also included: Diagnosing, Setting, Casting, Removal of a cast and Expedient casting. Pharmacy

Biological
If there's a biological attack or a natural outbreak there are a number of things you can do that will insure the survival of you and your charges. This is exactly what to do and expect for Anthrax, Plague, Cholera, Typhoid, Smallpox, and Other Biological organisms. The subject teaches Prophylaxis and Treatment-- including Pharmacy

Field Anesthesia:
Making an injury or and area of the body numb is what is needed when administering any of the advanced surgical or fracture treatments. Locals (Infusion and Topical), Nerve Blocks, Sedation, Others, Pharmacy.

Alternative Medications: Alternative (non-pharma) medications aren't just a passing fancy. They work. Homeopathic, Naturopathic, Allopathic, Vaccines.

Nuclear Defense Issues
The unthinkable has happened! The grid is down, your digital safe with all the survival gear won’t open—now what? Sheltering, Shielding, Decontamination, EMP Management, Power Plants, Dirty Bombs, Shelter in Place, KIO3 or KI (thyroid blockade). What to expect for long term survival for post nuclear events or grid down event. Lots of pharmacy considerations.

Other—there will be several other minor subjects which will be covered throughout the course. There will also be ample time for questions and answers
